From Proto-Brythonic *hėlɨg, from Proto-Celtic *salixs, from Proto-Indo-European *sl̥H-ik- (willow). Cognate with Welsh helyg, Breton halegen, Irish saileach, Scottish Gaelic seileach, Manx shellagh, Latin salix, Old English sealh and English sallow.
