From Old Norse hvískra, from Proto-Germanic *hwīskrōną, a variant of *hwistlōną (in Danish hvisle, Old Norse hvísla, English whistle), *hwisprōną (in English whisper, German wispern), and *hwisplōną (in German wispeln).
