From Middle Welsh hy-, from Old Welsh hi-, from Proto-Brythonic *hu-, from Proto-Celtic *su-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁su- (good). Cognate with Cornish he- and Ancient Greek εὐ- (eu-, good).
