Etymology[edit]

From New Latin hypoglōssus +‎ -al, from Ancient Greek ῠ̔πόγλωσσος (hupóglōssos, under the tongue), from ῠ̔πο- (hupo-, under, hypo-) +‎ γλῶσσᾰ (glôssa, tongue) +‎ -ος (-os, adjectival suffix); equivalent to hypo- +‎ glossal.
