Etymology[edit]

Shortened from von ihretwegen, which can be traced through two developmental routes. One route is from von ihrentwegen / von ihrent wegen, from von ihren wegen, from Middle High German von irn wegen, in which wegen was the dative plural of modern-day Weg and irn was the possessive pronoun in the dative plural.

Another route can be traced from von ihrtwegen / von ihrt wegen, from Middle High German von irt wegen, from von ir wegen, in which ir was the genitive pronoun. See more at wegen.
