Etymology[edit]

From Old Irish immechtrach (outer, external, outside, further; extreme, final, utter), from immechtar (extremity, outside, end). By surface analysis, imeachtar (outer part, outside; outer region, outskirts) +‎ -ach (adjectival suffix).
