Etymology[edit]
Either from the following:
- From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *əmpu (“grandparent/grandchild (recipr.); ancestor; lord, master, owner”)[1]
- From Hokkien, possibly 姆婆 (ḿ-pô)[2] or 引婆 (ín-pô),[3][4] recorded in the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum (1626-1642) as “m̄ pō” and “ìn pō”.[2]
Zorc (1985) records both etymologies but finds the Chinese etymology as less likely.[5]
