Etymology[edit]
Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydʰ- (“to ignite, fire”), which would make it cognate with Latin aethēr (“heaven, sky”), Sanskrit एध (edha, “fuel”) and Old English āl (“fire”).
