Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish یالی (yalı), from Greek γιαλός (gialós), from Ancient Greek αἰγιαλός (aigialós). The same source etymon passed via Dalmatian as ìgalo.

- an outer area that delimitates either sea or civilization, bank, shore, brim of a body of water or as well the outskirt of a town
