Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *küünärä, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *küńä. Related to Finnish kyynärä and Hungarian könyök.

Noun[edit]

küünar (genitive küünra, partitive küünart)

  1. (obsolete, except in compounds) elbow
  2. cubit, ell (unit)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The Estonian küünar was equal to 53.3 cm or 60.7 cm, depending on field of application. Thus, it is closer in length to the English cubit (anything between 17 and 21 inches or 42 to 53 cm) than ell (45 inches or 114.3 cm). However, originally the ell was defined as equal to 18 inches (45.7 cm).
