Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish قیصمق (kısmak), from Proto-Turkic *kïs- (short, narrow; to squeeze). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (kıs-),[1] etc.

Verb[edit]

kısmak (third-person singular simple present kısar)

  1. to reduce
    Bakanlık harcamaları kıstı.
    The ministry has reduced the expenses.
  2. to throttle, to choke
  3. to turn down (volume)
    Müziğin sesini kıs!
    Turn down the volume of the music!
