Etymology[edit]

From Japanese 怪獣 (かいじゅう, kaijū), from Middle Chinese (kˠuɛiH, strange, fantastic) +‎ (ɕɨuH, beast) (compare Mandarin 怪獸怪兽 (guàishòu)).
