From Malay kala jengking, from Classical Malay kala jengking, from Javanese kalajengking (ꦏꦭꦗꦼꦁꦏꦶꦁ), from Old Javanese kala jĕṅkiṅ. Equivalent to kala (stinging animal, scorpion) +‎ jengking (upside-down, topsy-turvy). The standard spelling was influenced by Javanese spelling.
