Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from German Karte, like kārts “playing cards” (the latter apparently having suffered the influence of kārts “pole” on its form), first attested as zemes kārte (with a long ā) in the 1850s, and later on (by the end of the 19th century) simply as karte (with a short e).[1]
