Etymology[edit]

From Turkish [Term?], composed of Kefe (Caffa, a city in Crimea) + kil (clay). The material was imported from that region of Crimea.[1]

Alternatively, according to Webster (1913), from Persian کف (kaf, foam) + گل (gel, clay). Note that Turkish kil is from Persian گل (gel).
