Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German kezzel, from Old High German kezzil, from Proto-West Germanic *katil, from Proto-Germanic *katilaz (kettle, bucket, vessel), probably a borrowing from Latin catīllus (small bowl). Cognate with German Kessel, English kettle. Doublet of kaiin (washbasin).
