Ultimately Proto-Indo-European origin through Proto-Indo-Iranian, possibly through an Iranian language intermediate; cf. Iranian Persian خدا (xodâ), Pashto خدای (xwdây), Proto-Iranian *hwatā́wā, Sanskrit स्वतवस् (svátavas).
