First attested in 1858, with at least two possible etymologies:

• Originally student slang, from kines +‎ -a, possibly referring to Chinese beds which may look temporary from a European point of view.
• An early Romani loan related to Traveller Norwegian kino (“tired”), from Romani khino (“tired”). Related to Sanskrit खिन्न (khinna, “exhausted”).
