Inherited from Old Polish klej, klij, from Proto-Slavic *klějь, *klьjь or *kъlějь, *kъlьjь. Further etymology unclear. Perhaps derived from Proto-Indo-European *kol-. Possible cognates include Ancient Greek κόλλᾰ (kólla) and Middle Low German helen.
