Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish kvæfia, qvæfia, (compare Old Icelandic kvefja, kefja), from Proto-Germanic *kwēbijaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₂bʰ- (to dive, dive in). Cognate with Old Norse kœfa, kvæfa, Icelandic kæfa.
