Estonian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *lebäit'äk, cognate to Finnish levätä. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *hliwjaną (compare Middle High German ge-liuwen (to rest)) or Proto-Germanic *slēpaną (to sleep) (compare Old English slæpan (to sleep)).

Originally a rarely-used dialectal word, but it was brought into the standard language in the example of Finnish.
