Icelandic[edit]

Verb[edit]

leggja á (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative lagði á, supine lagt á)

  1. (transitive, intransitive, governs the accusative) to hang up
Ég tók upp símann, sagði „ég er á leiðinni“ og laggði svo á.
I picked up the phone and said "I'm on my way" and then hung up.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The verb skella á has a harsher and more of a negative connotation (akin to slamming the phone down) than the verb leggja á which has a softer meaning (akin to laying the phone down).
