Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic лѣтописьць (lětopisĭcĭ, writer of the years), from Old Church Slavonic лѣто (lěto, year) + пьсати (pĭsati, to write). Calque of Ancient Greek χρονογραφίας (khronographías).
