Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Vietic *-lɛːmʔ (“to lick”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *(c)liəmʔ ~ *(c)limʔ (“to lick”), with obvious imitative origin. Cognate with Khmu [Cuang] krliəm ("to lick the lips"), Khasi jylliem, Bolyu ljim³¹.
Compare also Old Chinese 舔 (OC *l̥ˤ[i]mʔ) (B-S) (SV: thiểm), Chepang लेम्ह्सा (lemhsā, “to lick”), Dumi lem ~ ljam ("tongue").
