From Middle Welsh lludw, lludu, from Proto-Brythonic *llʉdw, from Proto-Celtic *loutus, possibly from a Proto-Indo-European root shared by Sanskrit उल्का (ulkā, “meteor, firebrand, torch”).

Cognate with Breton ludu, Scottish Gaelic luath, Irish luath.
