Etymology[edit]
From Old Irish loiscid (compare Scottish Gaelic loisg), from Proto-Celtic *laɸsketi (“to shine, burn”) (whence Welsh llosgi (“to burn”)), from Proto-Indo-European *lh₂p-sḱéti, (bearing the present-forming suffix *-sḱe-), from the telic root *leh₂p- (“to light, shine”). Related to Ancient Greek λάμπω (lámpō, “I shine”).
