Etymology[edit]

Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Latin mataxa, from Ancient Greek μέταξα (métaxa). Meaning in common with Eastern Romance: compare Romanian mătase (silk), however different than Dalmatian matuos and Italian matassa (skein, hank).
