Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Afroasiatic. Compare Proto-Berber *măraw (whence Central Atlas Tamazight ⵎⵔⴰⵡ (mraw)) and Proto-Chadic *gʷam- (with metathesis, if not borrowed from Niger-Congo), whence Hausa gōmà.
