English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unadapted borrowing from Japanese 魔女っ子 (majokko), composed of 魔女 (witch) +‎ っ子 (person having a certain quality, also diminutive suffix).

This term is sometimes also glossed in English as “little witch”, the word (ko) meaning “child” or “small”.

Noun[edit]

majokko (plural majokko)

  1. (anime, manga) A magical girl.
    • 1999 July 13, Animeg3282, “The magical girl thread”, in rec.arts.anime.misc[1] (Usenet):
The viewer is normally treated to the transformation from the point of view of the majokko herself - the other people around her basically would see a "flash of light" and (poof!) she's changed.
  2. A manga or anime focusing on one or more majokko.
    • 2006 September 25, GeoffC, “Magical Girl Anime by year”, in rec.arts.anime.misc[2] (Usenet):
Not exactly a magical-girl-anime list, but with the "shoujo" switch, it includes a great many of them. I've seen many of the majokko, including some rarities like Majokko Chikuru - better known as Magic Girl Tickle / Majokko Tikkuru.
