Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Oceanic *ma-ramaR (shine, be bright) (compare Hawaiian malama (moon, moonlight)) from *ramaR (light, luminosity) (compare Hawaiian lama (torch, light)), probably from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *damaR from Proto-Austronesian *damaR (though the Malayo-Polynesian examples outside of Oceanic such as Malay damar mostly refer to plant resins, said to be related in meaning through their use in torches).
