Inherited from Late Latin māchināre (mill, grind), a verb based on Latin māchina (device, mill), an early borrowing from Ancient Greek. Compare Venetian masnar~maxenar, Dalmatian macnur, Italian macinare. Morphological doublet of machinâ, a borrowing from Latin.
