Romanian[edit]

Mazăre

Etymology[edit]

Perhaps from Thracian *μαζελα (*mazela),[1] eventually from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵʰ-elo (small bean). Due to phonetic difficulties regarding [u], less likely from Proto-Albanian *mādzula, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵʰ-ulo (small bean). Compare Aromanian madzãri (peas); see also the related Albanian modhull (vetchling, yellow vetchling, vetch).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈma.zə.re/
  • Hyphenation: ma‧ză‧re

Noun[edit]

mazăre f (uncountable)

  1. (collective) peas (Pisum sativum)
