From Proto-Tai *C̥.baːŋᴬ (thin (not thick)). Cognate with Thai บาง (baang), Lao ບາງ (bāng), Shan မၢင် (mǎang) or ဝၢင် (wǎang), Ahom 𑜈𑜂𑜫 (baṅ).
