Etymology

Unknown, probably from Sanskrit मृच् (mṛc), which is compound form of मृद् (mṛd, “earth, soil”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *ml̥dʰo-. For example, Sanskrit मृच्चय (mṛccaya, “a heap of earth”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
