Origin uncertain and obscure, but likely related to Old Norse miski (misdeed, wrong, offense, harm). Perhaps dissimilated from earlier Proto-West Germanic *missikōn, from Proto-Germanic *missikōną (to do harm or damage to, offend), equivalent to miss +‎ -cian.
