Etymology[edit]
Compound of moeder (“mother”) + taal (“language”). The sense “mother tongue” was initially only used as a genitival noun phrase moeders taal, moederstaal, whence moerstaal; spellings without interfix -s- become normal for this sense in the 18th century.
