Presumably from Proto-Eastern Algonquian *mōšəkīnkw (“rabbit, hare”). Perhaps related to Abenaki matguas (“rabbit”), Penobscot máhtəkʷehso (“snowshoe hare, rabbit”), Malecite-Passamaquoddy mahtoqehs (“rabbit”), Mohegan-Pequot tuksáhs (“rabbit”).
