From Central Proto-Philippine *hamurʔawən (“Vitex parviflora”). Compare Pangasinan bulawen, Bikol Central hamurawon, Aklanon hamue-awon, Hiligaynon hamul-awon, Waray-Waray hamurawon, Maranao molaon, and Tausug hamulawn. Doublet of mulabe.
