From Old Norse mirra, from Latin myrrha, from Ancient Greek μύρρα (múrrha), from a Semitic root M-R-R meaning bitter. Compare Arabic مُرّ (murr, “bitter”), Hebrew מֹר (“bitterness, acrimony”).
