Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *närhi, originally an onomatopoeic word; cognate with Estonian -näär, Ingrian -näri, Karelian närhi, Veps näriz, Votic näri.[1] Compare Erzya нармунь (narmuń, “bird”), the initial component of which has a similar onomatopoeic root.[2]
