From Proto-Tai *nawᴮ (rotten). Cognate with Thai เน่า (nâo), Northern Thai ᨶᩮᩢ᩵ᩣ, Lao ເນົ່າ (nao), ᦓᧁᧈ (naw¹), Shan ၼဝ်ႈ (nāo), Ahom 𑜃𑜧 (naw) or 𑜃𑜧𑜈𑜫 (naww), Saek เหน้า.
