From Proto-Tai *ʰnaːjᴮ (tired; bored). Cognate with Thai หน่าย (nàai), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨶ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨿ, Lao ໜ່າຍ (nāi), Khün ᩉ᩠ᨶ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨿ, ᦐᦻᧈ (ṅaay¹), Bouyei naais, Zuojiang Zhuang naiq.
