Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ŋiaw (“meow of a cat”), possibly of onomatopoeic origin. Compare Ilocano ngiaw (“meow”), Kankanaey ngiyaw (“cat”), Ibaloi ngiyaw (“cat”), Karao ngiyaw (“cat”), Bikol Central ngiyaw (“meow”), Cebuano ngiyaw (“meow”), and Malay ngiau (“meow”). See also Hokkien 貓/猫 (niau, “cat”) and Japanese にゃあ (nyā).
