Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *mbrəuX (fish). Cognate with Iu Mien mbiauz; outside of Hmong-Mien, compare Proto-Tai *plaːᴬ (id), whence Thai ปลา (bplaa, id).[1]
