Derivative of earlier *nust (before), from Proto-Nuristani *náwišta, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *náwištʰas (newest), from Proto-Indo-European *néwisth₂os, superlative of *néwos/*néwyos (whence nui). Cognate with Kamkata-viri nüštë́ř, Waigali nüst, Vedic Sanskrit नविष्ठ (náviṣṭha), English newest.
