Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from French pain riche (literally rich bread), attested since 1884 in Swedish. Attested in French since the 1860s, but became obsolete in French in the early 20th century. Often incorrectly said to be a uniquely Swedish formation from French constituent words (a pseudo-Gallicism).
