Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly linked to Ancient Greek πιττάκιον (pittákion) (cf. Latin pittacium (label; patch)), or from a Vulgar Latin root *piticus. Compare Romanian petic (patch, rag, shred), Calabrian pettica ("leather band, strip"); cf. also Spanish pedazo (piece).
