Per Vasmer, from Proto-Indo-European *pel-, *pl̥n-.

Cognate with Latvian pèļņa (gain, profit), pelnīt (to profit), Proto-Slavic *pelnъ (loot). Likely related to Proto-Germanic *falaz (for sale). Unclear if related to Ancient Greek πωλέω (pōléō, I sell).
