From Proto-Tai *ʰwaŋᴮ. Cognate with Thai ฝั่ง (fàng), Lao ຝັ່ງ (fang), ᦚᧂᧈ (ḟang¹), Shan ၽင်ႇ (phàng) or ၾင်ႇ (fàng), Tai Nüa ᥜᥒᥱ (fǎng).
