Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek πνίγειν (pnígein, to choke, to stifle) (a property of nitrogen) + -ct- +‎ -o- +‎ -gen, with the -ct- perhaps by analogy with pnictide. The first component is ultimately from Pre-Greek.
